Ground Stations Are the Bottleneck Nobody Budgets For
Mission planning attention flows naturally to the parts that leave the atmosphere. The spacecraft, the launch, the instrument. Then the first data comes down and someone discovers that the sensor generates far more information per orbit than the available contact time can carry, and that the fix involves antennas, licences and land.
Contact time is finite and awkward
A satellite in low orbit passes over a given site for a few minutes at a time, several times a day, on a schedule set by orbital mechanics rather than convenience. Multiply the usable minutes by the achievable data rate and you have a hard ceiling on what the mission can return. Options for widening the pipe
- More ground sites, which means more spectrum licences and more maintenance
- Higher frequency bands, faster but more sensitive to rain and harder to point
- Onboard processing, downlinking conclusions instead of raw frames
- Inter-satellite relay, trading complexity for near-continuous availability
- Commercial ground-station-as-a-service, renting time on shared networks
Why renting became normal
Building a global network for a handful of satellites never made financial sense, and shared networks solved it the same way cloud computing solved server rooms. The trade is scheduling: shared capacity means competing for passes, and priority costs money. For missions where a delayed downlink is merely inconvenient, that is fine. For anything time-critical, it is a risk to be contracted around explicitly.
Plan the segment first
The practical advice is unromantic. Before finalising an instrument, calculate daily data volume, achievable contact minutes, realistic link margin and the resulting latency from observation to delivered product. If that number does not meet the customer requirement, the instrument is wrong, not the ground segment. Discovering this on paper costs a week. Discovering it in orbit costs the mission's usefulness.
